Watershed-friendly PA is a collaboration between Penn State Extension’s statewide Master Watershed Steward Program and the Nurture Nature Center in Easton, PA and is funded through the Department of Environmental Protection’s 2022 Environmental Education Grants Program.
The Master Watershed Steward program transforms citizens into a managed, educated, organized volunteer force addressing local conservation priorities. A key strength of the program is its focus on collaboration, working with a broad partnership of local and state organizations, agencies, and government. People who want to make a difference are given the information and the opportunity to do so, guided by local conservation professionals who organize, supervise, and engage the volunteers to make a positive impact in their communities and their water quality. Nurture Nature Center (NNC), founded in 2007, is a center dedicated to engaging the public in learning about environmental risks. Home to a breathtaking Science on a Sphere® globe as well as other educational science exhibits, several art galleries, and an urban recycle garden, NNC today hosts many thousands of visitors each year. Using a unique blend of science, art, and community dialogue to engage the public, our programming covers a wide range of timely and important topics relating to the environment (climate, ecosystems and land use, for example). As a part of this work, NNC has developed and advanced models for science education, arts programming, as well as community engagement initiatives that have been nationally disseminated to other science centers and organizations.
